December has been an amazing month for Miss Wales. It was fantastic to have Miss World in the UK this year – and it was so good to see so many of this year’s finalists go to support Alice. As usual in the UK, there were those who decried the event. I’m sceptical (no surprise) about their criticisms and their claims about pageantry. Mainly because I doubt they have ever been to a pageant, met the girls who take part in them or talk directly to the people who run them. Certainly, I’ve never had a conversation with them! I truly believe that Miss Wales completely empowers young women and that the true feminists are on the stage supporting women, celebrating women and not being so critical of women. I think of us as Feminists – that’s Feminists with a capital F – very proud of the feminine and very aware that women should make their own choices in how they choose to celebrate the female. I have to be honest and say it completely baffles me that women are so judged on what they do while men don’t seem to be under the same spotlight. Someone tell me why it’s ok for guys to hit seven bells out of each other in a boxing ring on prime time TV while women who walk a catwalk feeling good about themselves are held up to ridicule? But the reality is life isn’t fair is it? Knowing that is pretty heartening and certainly very liberating. When you stop worrying about the ‘fairness’ of it all, you get up and carry on regardless. And that’s what we’ll keep doing!
