Well, here we go again!

The class of Miss Wales 2017 is starting to come together. Last week there was standing room only at the first set of interviews for next year’s competition. I was thrilled with the turnout and even more thrilled with what I was about to hear.

As a PR girl, you know you have reached your promotional destination when people unintentionally repeat your key messages back to you. And that’s what happened on Thursday.

The girls told me they wanted to be ‘the best they can be’; they told me they ‘wanted to make a difference’; they explained they looked up to former finalists and wanted to be ‘role models’ themselves and to ‘grow in confidence.’

If I had to write a rule book for Miss Wales – that is what it would read. The wonderful thing about pageantry is that we just get to do these things wearing some cracking heels and sparkling dresses! And why not? Girls love beauty; girls love to be feminine and girls love the traditionally female values of family, peace and charity. There is no cliché here – we are what we are and it’s high time we were proud of it too. That’s true feminism or as I like to call it Feminism with a capital F!

So I walked away from the evening as encouraged, inspired and excited as I always do. How lucky am I to have this job? I feel blessed that year in year out, young women trust their hopes, aims and aspirations with the Miss Wales competition. What is even more heart-warming is that they believe in it because of what others tell them – on recommendation of girls who have been there before. We don’t have an advertising budget as such – our ambassadors are the former finalists who do the selling for me.

Last year’s Miss Wales finalists were a force to be reckoned with undertaking all sorts of initiatives and generating more than £22k for the Miss World charity Beauty with a Purpose. No two years are ever the same at Miss Wales and I am looking forward to the stories and successes of these new girls on the block.

I know some interesting times will unfold….some real laughs, characters and hopefully memories that will last them a lifetime. So bring it on…Miss Wales 2017, let the good times roll 🙂
