With the competition just around the corner I have realised how amazing my Miss Wales experience has actually been so far. I have met some amazing girls already and made some memorable friendships I know that will build stronger throughout the competition.
My Miss Wales experience really started in 2012. I was crowned as ‘Miss Newport 2012’ at this time I was only 17 years old and personally didn’t believe I was a very confident person, especially when it came to speaking to a large group of people. The Title of Miss Newport enabled me to win a place in the final of Miss Wales. I didn’t place that year, but by the end my confidence levels had increased and I told myself in a couple of years I would try and re-enter again, so here I am in 2016 after being successful in gaining a place.
The day I opened that Email informing me that I had been successful in winning a place to enter Miss Wales was probably one of the happiest days of my life as I wasn’t expecting it at all, I was just excited to start my journey all over again and create some fantastic friendships.
As a Soldier in the British Army I knew I had to inform work straight away about the news, they were very supportive and encouraging about me taking part in the competition. Due to my job as an Armoured Engineer and working on 60 Tonne tanks getting covered in oil and grease, which is something I thoroughly enjoy I was also very excited to show the fact I have two personalities. I am a very dedicated and hardworking women in my profession but then also have my feminine side, which enjoy getting my hair and make up done as much as possible. I am personally hoping that many young girls who are aspiring to join will see my story and see how supportive and motivational the Army have been towards me.
My first Miss Wales experience was receiving the welcome packages which includes the red t-shits and sashes. I was so nervous on the journey down but when I had met all the girls and we had relaxed and had a laugh with each other, I was then very excited to see what the rest of the months had to entail.
Around Christmas 2015 my story ‘Royal Engineer granted permission to take part in Miss Wales’ was published in the papers nationwide. I was very overwhelmed by all the support I had from serving/ Ex- serving military personal but also those outside the military. I couldn’t have wished for a better response off everybody and I was also very thrilled by the support I received.
The charity for Miss Wales and Miss world is ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ as a finalist we had to come up with a unique or unusual charity event for Feb Fundraiser. As one of my sponsors is ’26 Engineer regiment’ I thought it would be a great way to get everybody involved from work. After numerous ideas I came up with an idea of ’24hr cycle and run.’ There was a lot of preparation put into it and took a lot of organising but once it was set up we all couldn’t wait to get started. My charity day was a humongous hit in work and everybody worked so hard. There was at least 20 of us taking part and I was very impressed with all the hard work and effort they all put in. We had teams competing against each other on who could run or cycle the furthest in an hour, I had decided to set a target of 1,500 miles which was equivalent form Wales to Gibraltar. I chose Gibraltar due to the military history of the area. Because of all the dedication everybody had put in our final target was in fact 1,552.08 miles. By the end everybody was worn out and our bodies were pushed to the limits and because of this we raised a staggering £1,110.52 for an amazing cause and our target is still going up daily.
I am so thankful for this opportunity to take part in such an amazing competition which is centred all around empowering young Women all across Wales. I have noticed that my confidence levels have grown massively and this is down to all the hard work that Paula Abbandonato has taught us over the last couple of months. I am looking forward to seeing what will happen in the future, and creating some life changing memories with an amazing group of women in the Miss Wales final 2016
